Chilli Con Carne

1 tbspn oil 1 beef stock cube
¼ onion (75 gm prepared weight) ¼ tspn soft brown sugar
1 clove garlic 2 tspn tomato purée
50 gm meat free mince or 20 gm dried soya mince Black pepper
1 tspn hot chilli powder ½ small tin kidney beans
3 tbspn chopped tomato  



  1. Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole.
  2. Fry the onion and garlic over a medium heat for 5 min.
  3. Add ´mince´ and chilli powder, stir and fry for 1-2 min.
  4. Add 150 ml water, tomatoes, sugar, tomato purée and freshly ground black pepper.
  5. Crush in the stock cube.
  6. Stir well and bring to the boil and then simmer, covered, for 30 min, stirring often (add water if it becomes too dry).
  7. Uncover the casserole, and after 25 min, add the kidney beans.


  1. Serve with rice.
  2. Garnish with peas.
